Laugh Your Dis-ease Away

Don't Make Me Laugh! 

     Yesterday was a day like any other.  I brought Felix home from school, got him a snack, and began to search my mind for the silliest thing I could do to get the afternoon off to a good start :)

     I decided to go for an old favorite.  I got out the ukelele, drummed up my best hillbilly accent, and began to sing...

      Felix turned on a dime and yelled, "Mom, don't make me laugh!  I'm trying to be angry!"

       Well, that was the end of my hillbilly moment.  

     At least for about 30 seconds until Felix decided he was done being angry and he wanted to add some funny noises to my song :)

     But I thought about that moment for the rest of the day.  I mean, CAN you stay angry if someone makes you laugh?  Can you hold on to tension?  Stress?  Irritation?  What about illness?
  
     I asked Felix.  He said, "No!  I have to make you go away if I want to be mad.  You're too silly."

     Well, it turns out that Felix is up to speed with the latest research! :)

     The University of Graz in Austria has proven that laughter lowers stress hormones, boosts your immune system, reduces pain, and prevents heart disease!

     But there is some bad news.

     The research has also determined that humor is not a reliable source for consistent laughter and all of its subsequent benefits.

     Seriously folks.

     We live in a world that has been deemed comically-challenged.

     The solution?

Fake it!

     Dr. Madan Kataria, a physician from India, is here to rescue us from our lack of humor.  He has created an entire branch of yoga designed to get you laughing no matter what!

     It's called Laughter Yoga, and you can see a clip of Dr. Kataria and John Cleese practicing here.

     People in 60 countries all over the world gather to say, Ha ha ha ha, ho ho ho, hee hee hee," and say goodbye to their stress, depression and illness.

Resistance Is Futile

     And there's one more thing.

     The Institute of HeartMath has proven that happiness is highly contagious.  It only takes three people in a room of 100 to infect everyone else.

     Moreover, when participants gather to laugh for no reason, it only takes a few minutes of awkward "ha ha ha" before everyone in the room is truly laughing their patooties off.

     So go ahead, be the one that causes anger and illness to run and hide.

     Laugh for no reason :)

     And see how many friends you can infect with health and happiness this month!

Natural Pain Relief- How to Relieve Your Pain with One SImple Step :)

It's Gotta Be the Shoes! 
    
     I remember that day as if it were yesterday.  I was sitting on Sproul Plaza on the UC Berkeley campus, attempting to write despite the pain and numbness of a very-painful-but-undiagnosable inflammatory wrist condition I had developed recently.

     A man dressed head-to-toe in pink spandex riding a unicycle passes by me, stops, reverses, looks right at me and says, "Why are you so sad, pretty lady?  Take off your shoes....It's gotta be the shoes."

     Can you just see it?  Doesn't it make you smile? :)
Well, I was not amused.

    "If only you knew what I was dealing with," I thought.

     "If you knew how many experts I'd seen.  How many tests I'd been through. How many needles I'd been poked with...

     "You wouldn't be so flippant with me.
     "It's the shoes....
     "As if."

     But if you know me, you know what happened next :)
Me and my "as if" took off our shoes.

     We put our books and pencils away, walked around campus, and sooner than you could say, "Pink Man, what did you DO to me?" we had a spring in our step and a smile on our face.

     It must have been the Pink Man.


No!  It Was the Shoes!


     I don't know if Pink Man was channeling Edgar Cayce, on LSD, or just ahead of his time, but he gave me some really good advice!

     And now, thanks to years of research and the perseverance of Clint Ober, a man determined to reduce his own pain, over 7000 studies have now been published that prove pain and inflammation can be significantly reduced by taking off your shoes!

     Really.

     Its a practice called Earthing, and the process is simple.  In fact, take your computer with you and do it with me now....

     Take off your shoes and socks.  That feels good already, doesn't it? :)
     
      Now go outside.

      Touch your naked toes to the dirt, grass, sand, or cement.
     
     Great.
      
     Last step... Breathe a sigh of relief as the pain drains from your body.

     That's it.

     "That's cute and all," you might be saying, "but where's the evidence?  I mean, I'm not going to get all earthy just for fun, you know."

     Well, I'm glad you asked! :)

     Free electrons cover the surface of the earth, and they are just waiting for you to take off your shoes, so they can rush in and fight the good fight against pain-producing free radicals.

     All you have to do is let them in :)

     And you don't even need Pink Man.

     But you get extra points if you smile :)
     And breathe...
     And remember how good it is to be alive :)

     Because when you do all those things while you're connected to the immense power that is Mother Earth...

     Your heart rate slows down.  The chemicals of tension and stress disappear from your bloodstream.  Your immune system improves.  And your body gets pumped full of tranquility and euphoria.

     And with all that , my friend,

     Your "as if" doesn't stand a chance :)

     Go ahead.  Give it a try.  Feel the tingle in your feet as they soak up the delicious electrons.

     You'll wonder how you ever went a day without connecting with your Mother :)

Light up the Room! - How to Create a Healthy Glow WIthout Changing Your Diet or Exercise Regime :)

     Have you ever noticed that light seems to follow certain people around?  I mean, it comes out of their eyes, their hair, their voices...

     And others....well...it's like their attitude ate too many beans for lunch and you want to get out the vibe-freshening spray.

     Right?

     I mean seriously, wouldn't it be great if you had a can of fresh air and sunlight available to you at all times?

     I thought you might be interested :)

     Are you ready for the good news?

You Are Powerful!


     Do you remember the DNA that we talked about last month?  That DNA that you're changing with your every thought? That DNA that is so grateful every time you remember your awesomeness?     

     Well, physicist Vladimir Poponin has shown that the DNA that's in each of your three trillion cells...

     It's a light magnet.

     That's right, that light that you think you see around some people.... It's no illusion.  Light is literally spiraling around them.

     Did I really say that?

     Yes.

     You can actually get light to veer off course in order to dance around you.

How to Get Your Glow On :)

     "That's great," you might be saying, "but how many years of silent meditation and walking on hot coals do I need before I learn to use the Force and bend light waves?"

     "Only belief in yourself, must have you," says Yoda. 

     And I say you only need 30 seconds. Right here.  Right now. :)

     Are you ready?

     Great.  Go ahead and take a nice deep breath.

     Now soften your gaze and take another deep breath.  This time imagine that you're breathing in and out through your heart.

     Perfect.

     Now bring to mind something you're grateful for.  Maybe it's your best friend, your child, your eyesight, or your heartbeat.  

     Great.  Bask here for a moment.  Notice how great it feels.

     Nice!  You, my friend, have just summoned light around you and started a photon dance party!

     Can you feel the glow? :)

     And one more thing.  That light you just created... The Institute of HeartMath has shown that it is highly contagious.

     In fact, it only takes 1% of the population creating these mini light shows to infect everyone else.

     So, remember those moments when you wanted your vibe-freshening spray?

     It's all YOU babeeeee!

     Breathe from your heart, remember how grateful you are to be alive, and voilá!  You have opened up a can of fresh air and sunlight into the world!

     So go forth and infect as many people as you can with joy and light! :)

Get Your Zen on and Watch Dis-ease Melt Away 

     "It's going to be OK. Let's just chill out for a minute." This was my attempt at calming down my son, who was certain that we were having a low-on-legos emergency. His response was classic: "There are a lot of things I can do mom, but I don't know how to chill out!"

     Isn't this how we all feel? I mean, nobody enjoys the experience of being stressed out- racing heart rate, sweaty palms, the inability to think clearly... And it all seems out of our control. Children screaming, drivers cutting us off on the freeway, increased demands at work, bills... On top of it all, statistics show that 80-90 percent of all illness is caused by stress.

     Think about that statement....."80-90% of all illness is caused by stress"..... That means that if we can get our Zen on, we have an 80-90% chance of health! I like those odds!

     The human body is truly an amazing machine. It responds to your every thought and feeling by creating the molecular equivalent of that thought or feeling, and sending it coursing through your veins. In fact, when you're in a peaceful state of tranquility, your body actually produces valium! That's right, your body makes the exact same benzodiazepine molecule sold as a sedative, but you get none of the side effects. 


Zen Chemistry 101- How to Make a Chill Pill J

     That's nice, you might be saying, but how do I produce valium if I'm stressed? How do I find tranquility in the middle of traffic? How do I take the proverbial chill pill?

     Well....
     You have two very powerful Zen factories available to you at each moment of each day. The first one is your beautiful smile. That's right! Smiling releases endorphins (opiates,) serotonin (antidepressants,) and analgesics (pain killers) into your bloodstream.   Give it a try. Go ahead. Right now. Allow the sides of your mouth to curl upwards ever so slightly. Now try to stay stressed. Try to get mad. Or don't J Go with the smile. Allow it to encompass your whole body and be naturally high, happy and feeling good! J

     The second Zen factory is your breath.  Minty fresh, or full of garlic, this trick works Take a moment right now, keeping your smile, and breathe deeply....all the way down to your belly. Now breathe out, and let go. Breathe in...breathe out. Smile...let go.
  
     You'll be amazed at how quickly you can turn down the dial of the stress hormones, and turn up the dial of the calming ones. It just takes a decision, a few facial muscles, and some oxygen.  The simplicity of it all sneaks up on those stress molecules like an aikido master, and despite all your practice at feeling stressed, you find you're feeling better.

     And watch what happens to your kids, your family, your co-workers. Get your Zen on, and watch the indignation drain out of your co-worker's face. See how your kids smile back at you for no apparent reason.   

     Go ahead, be the one who lights up the room. Watch the happiness spread and know that you have mastered Zen Chemistry 101 J

Language Affects DNA! How to heal your body by changing your thoughts.

     "Just look into the mirror, stare into your own eyes, and say, 'I am wonderful.  I am confident and content in every way.'"  This was the advice from my therapist 13 years ago when I came in feeling really down on myself.

     My response? "You've got to be kidding!  There is no way I'm doing something so ridiculous!"

     It did get me laughing though.  Belly laughing.  All I could think of was Stuart Smalley with his full-length mirror saying, "I'm good enough.  I'm smart enough.  And doggone it, people like me."

     But I did secretly wonder if it would work.  I mean, wouldn't it be great if it were that easy?

     Wouldn't it be great if you could rid yourself of anxiety, self-doubt, or even arthritis with simple words?
  
     Well....that's right....I've got good news!

Your DNA is Listening!

     Russian scientists Grazyna Fosar and Franz Bludorf have proven that Stewart Smalley had more to offer than a few belly laughs at his expense.

     They have shown that language has the power to change your DNA.

     I'll say that again. Language changes your genetic code.

     Language changes your body.

     In fact, language has such a powerful effect on DNA, that these scientists were able to morph frog embryos into salamander embryos simply by sending a radio frequency telling them to be salamanders!! If language can do that, just think what it can do for your arthritis! :)
  
How Do I Program My DNA For Health?

     "OK, that's cool," you might be saying, "but do I really have to stare into my own eyes and whisper sweet nothings to myself? I don't live alone, you know."

     Good news! You don't have to be Stewart Smalley to positively affect your DNA.  And you can't turn yourself into a salamander.

     But you can program your DNA to produce less inflammation, less anxiety, better immune function, and to send the molecules of tranquility and euphoria coursing through your bloodstream.

     Are you ready to give it a try?  It will just take a moment :)

     OK, take a deep breath and allow your body to relax into your chair.

     Good job. Now take another deep breath.

     Now bring to mind something pretty cool about yourself. Maybe you're good at making peanut butter sandwiches. Or you can run an 8-minute mile. Or you got out of bed this morning despite your headache.

     Acknowledge yourself for this. It's ok. This is all in the privacy of your own mind :) 

     Great.

     Now that you're warmed up, bring to mind something totally fantastic about yourself. You know that thing you're proud of. Think about it. Feel it. Relish it.

     Done! DNA reprogrammed to produce health!

     Now do this everyday. Do it twice a day. In fact, every time you have a quiet moment to yourself, take a piece of that moment to acknowledge your awesomeness.

     Your DNA will thank you.

     And remember.... 

     YOU'RE AWESOME! :)
